Adobe plastering june 2nd 2011

IMAG0648.jpg
Here you can see the inside of the straw bale wall. The first coating of adobe has been done. We are going to close the part between wall and ceiling next days.

To get the clasps of the white straps nicely covered with adobe, we tied them with rope close to the straw bale.

After plastering adobe, the inside of the straw will get more humide. We are releaved to see it's already close to 15%.
IMAG0655.jpg
The upperpart of the straw bale wall will be connected to the roof construction. And then the rest of the space between wall and ceiling will be filled with straw.

We are going to fill the part between this wall and roof with pieces of straw bale. The compression will be less, though.
IMAG0649.jpgHere you can see both giant trees supporting the roof. On the right tree, you can still see the silent witness of a mistake during the building, a piece of metal connects roof with the tree.

Same image, only from the outside. Wieke has crawled through this hole and was inspired to make something pretty to stuff this hole.

First finish still reveales the rope in the strawbales. So we have to do a new layer. Which is fun to do...
IMAG0751.jpg
We uncovered the bottom of the wall. The wood will be covered with a waterresistent foil and the glasfoam bags will be protected from UV-light.
IMAG0753.jpg
Before applying the waterresistent foil we cut off pieces of straw.
IMAG0756.jpgHere you can see a flab of foil already applied. Next adobe layer the upperpart of the foil will also be covered.

Here you can see all the layers of the foundation:
- lose parts of glassfoam in the ground to protect against cold going under the wall
- bags of glassfoam to carry the straw bale wall
- waterresistent foil up to the wood
- black plastic (DPC) going down from the straw bale wall to seal the wall from rain dripping down
IMAG0769.jpg
Directly above the straw bale wall we put a row of wood.IMAG0757.jpg
The open spaces above the wall are being filled with straw bales and loose straw.

Apperently, you have to wear purple/pink to make adobe for the wall...

Adobe with sand, straw and gras is much harder to mix, but a lot of fun to do...
Come around to help us in june and august!
